BATTLE IN EGYPT
ALLIED ATTACK PETERS OUT f '
LONDON, July 28. There is again a lull in Egypt after yesterday's limited British attack in th« northern sector.
A message from the 8.8.C. reporter says that in the absence of any further news about events in the desert it can be taken for granted that the operations on all day yesterday have now ended.
A Reuter report says that General Auchinleck has withdrawn his forces in the northern sector to the positions they captured last Wednesday. The position of the Eighth Army has not been altered, and all the ground occupied last week is still in their hands. The Australians have now gone back to their original positions on the Tel el Isa sector, and the British and the South Africans have slightly improved their position. According to reports, the fighting petered out about 10 o'clock last night. It seems that the Allied tanks were unable to get to grips with the enemy's armoured forces because of minefields and anti-tank defences, but heavy casualties were inflicted on the Germans by British, Australian, and South African forces.
It is known now that a 22-hour bombardment preceded the British attack. Last night another heavy raid was made on Tbbru-k.
