INCREASED RETAIL PRICES IN. AUSTRALIA

CANBERRA, June i 2. i Retail prices in Australia have increased by 15 per cent, since the outbreak of war, said the Price Commissioner, Professor D. B. Copland. Increased prices were inevitable in wartime, he added. It was wrong to assume, however, that because some prices had risen, profiteering existed that civilian production had to >c severely reduced, the greatest presure for inflationary price rises would operate, and price control would become more and more vital for .the pro* tection of consumers. It was the job of his Department to see that increases in prices were commensurate with the unavoidable increases in cost.
