THE KHARKOV SECTOR

RUSSIANS ON THE DEFENSIVE

LONDON, June 12. A Russian communique states: "During yesterday in the Kharkov sectdr, our troops waged a fierce defensive battle against German tanks and infantry." The reports from Russia'indicate that it is still too early to judge the weight of the new German offensive in the Ukraine. On the Kalinin front, north-west of Moscow, General Zhukov's troops have smashed through the German defences in the outskirts of a large, town, and are being driven back street by street in furious hand-to-hand fighting. The town is possibly Rzhev, which the Russians have been investing for some time.
