THE MATERIAL AND SPIRITUAL

Today New Zealand is demonstrating its solidarity with the United Nations by a unique display of military preparedness and by a spontaneous outburst of enthusiasm for the flags of those nations which are pledged, as we are, to carry on until victory over the aggressor Powers is assured. Tomorrow the nation is invited by the great leader of the • United States, President Roosevelt, to turn for a moment from the material to the spiritual and to seek Divine aid in the struggle for the future of the world. As a Christian people, convinced of the justice of the cause for which we fight, we have a duty to acknowledge humbly the futility of relying solely on the strength which comes from armed might. Today was justly an occasion for tumult and, shouting; tomorrow is an occasion for quietly offering thanks to God for the protection He has given in the past and for seeking renewed strength to face manfully the trials of the future. In this spirit the people should answer President Roosevelt's, call to prayer.
