Mr. J. S. Barton returned to Wellington from Auckland today.

Mr. E. Windley was elected chairman of the Makara County Council at the annual meeting today. Mr. A. D. Park was the only other nominee.

.. Mr. A. D. Park, C.M.G., and Mr. T. N. Smallwood have been reappointed joint managing directors of the State Advances Corporation of New Zealand for a further term of. seven years. They will complete their original sevehryear appointments a^ the end of this month. The Rev. Archibald E" Hunt, who has been a patient in a private hospital, has returned to his home in Kelburn.

Mr. J. Purchase, who has been for a long period a member of the Makara County Council, today tendered his resignation from the council owing to his change of residence to Otorohanga. He received the good wishes of the other members, and appreciation of his services to the county was expresesd. r >

Mr. William Morrison, of Maxwell, chairman of the New Zealand Counties' Association, has been re-elected as chairman of the Waitotara County Council, a position he has held for the past twenty-four years. He has been a member, of the council for 37 years.

Brigadier-General P. Hurley, American Minister to New Zealand, has undergone a minor operation on. his scalp, necessitated by a wound received at Darwin last February, The operation was performed by Dr. W. J. Gardner, an American naval surgeon.

Mr. W. B. McKenzie, Wellington, has been appointed a member of the War Damage Commission. He takes the place of Mr. C. E. Brangwin, who has resigned.

Mr. I. Matheson (Wellington), vicepresident of the New Zealand Manufacturers' Federation, will attend a meeting of the federation council in Christchurch tomorrow. Messrs. J. A. Jacques and N. W. Thomas will represent the Auckland and Wellington associations, and the.secretary of the federation (Mr. D. I. Macdonald) will be in Christchurch for the, next few days on business.
