OBITUARY

SUPERINTENDENT C. W. HENDREY

SERGEANT T. F. BRENCHLEY

The death occurred yesterday at Wanganui, after a period of illness, of Sergeant Thomas Freeman Brenchley, who was in charge of the Marton Police Station. Sergeant Brenchley, who was 56 years of age, was born in Timaru, and joined the Police Force at Napier in 1910, shortly afterwards being transferred to Hastings. Later, he was put in charge of the Rahotu station, in the New Plymouth district, and in 1929 he was promoted to the rank of sergeant and transferred to Auckland. In 1936 he returned to New Plymouth, and was placed in charge at Marton in 1938. He is survived by his wife, a daughter, and a son, now overseas.

The death has occurred of Mr. Charles W. Hendrey, of Mount Eden, a former Superintendent of Police in Auckland. When he retired on superannuation early in 1926 he had completed 47 years' service in the Police Force of the Dominion.

Mr. Hehdrey was born in London 80 years ago, and came to New Zealand in 1876. He later joined the Armed Constabulary, ' An outstanding event in his career was his part in the capture of the noted Maori "prophet" Te Whiti, at Parihaka In 1881, Mr. Hendrey transferred to the police branch, and served for a brief period in Wellington before being sent to New Plymouth and then to Auckland. In 1909 he was promoted to the rank of sub-inspector. - In that office he continued until 1913, when he was made an inspector and transferred to Wellington. After four years in Wellington, he was given charge of the Wanganui-Taranaki district, and in 1921 he was promoted to the rank of superintendent and placed in charge of the Canterbury district. His final move was in 1922 to Auckland, where 23 years of his active service were spent. For the past 16 years Mr. Hendrey had been living in retirement at Mount Eden. • His wife predeceased him nine years ago, and he is survived by a son and a daughter.
