REPLY TO DE VALERA

LONDON, January 28,

Mr. J. M. Andrews, Prime Minister of Northern Ireland, replying to Mr. De Valera's protest against the arrival of American troops in Northern Ireland, said Northern Ireland took its stand on the constitutional position as it existed, and from that they would not deviate.

The presence of American forces in Northern Ireland was part of a vast strategic plan for the defeat of the Axis. Those troops were doubly welcome in the territory, and Northern Ireland was proud to be associated with them in the war.

Eire, for political or other reasons, might choose to stand outside, but Northern Ireland was in the fight for freedom and intended to see it through.
