SEVERE EARTHQUAKE

SOUTH OF NEW GUINEA

SYDNEY. January 28

A very severe earthquake in the Arafura Sea, south of Dutch New Guinea, was recorded early this morning at the Riverview Observatory. Sydney.

The maximum sweep of the recording pen was more than eight inches.

The earthquake was recorded at the Dominion Observatory. The tracing began at. 1.38 a.m. yesterday and continued for over three hours, and it was the largest recorded for some months. The distance of the centre of* the disturbance from Wellington was a little over 3000 miles, which would agree with the reports that it was in the Arafura Sea.
