GAINED BY CHINESE

GREATEST FOR YEARS

BIG AREA CLEARED

LONDON, October 10. Today's anniversary of the Chinese Republic has been marked ' by China's greatest victory since v 1938.

It was officially announced that Chinese troops have completed the occupation of the treaty port of Ichang, and that the area 90 miles north of Changsha has now been completely cleared of Japanese forces.

The Japanese, it Was stated, are back in the positions they held before their offensive was launched in the middle of last month.

Marshal Chiang Kai-shek today declared in a message to China that the nation's resistance during the past four years had laid the foundations for victory. The Chinese Foreign Minister, Dr. Quo Tai-chi, in a telegram of greetings to the 8.8.C., said that China had already been standing up to Japanese mechanised aggression for more than four years. Far from being beaten to her knees, China was going from strength to strength. This was demonstrated by her latest victory at Changsha, which was expected soon to be followed up by similar feats of valour on other fronts.
