FOREIGN COIN WINS

"wanganui guineas

RAKANUI TAKES HIGGIE

Unfortunately for the Wanganui Jockey Club light rain set in during the morning on Saturday and condi^ tions were far from pleasant for the second day of the Spring Meeting. The track steadily became worse as the day advanced and form was somewhat erratic, only two favourites winning, yet the champion horseman, W. J. Broughton, enjoyed a good innings, piloting three winners. The indifferent weather affected the attendance, and the turnover for the day was £28,035, compared with £28,755 on the second day. last year. The aggregate of £45,948 10s for the meeting showed a decrease of £1108 10s. CLASSIC TO TRENTHAM. A minor surprise was In store tot patrons in the Wanganui Guineas when Foreign Coin won the classic comfortably. He showed his appreciation of the easy going by jumping away smartly to take up the running, and although temporarily headed by Premature going along the back he was with the filly turning for home, from which point he drew away to win by three lengths "from Par Avion, who had some ground to make up over the lastj three furlongs. Burra Sahib, although looking a trifle burly, ran an excellent third, with Kevin ahead of Premature, who did not appreciate the soft turf. Corn Prince was prominent to the straight entrance, but lack of racing condition told. A poor field of five paraded for the Debutant Stakes, and the Hastingstrained Fescue was backed down to a short price, but after having every chance he was beaten into third, Damask, a product of Mr. G. M. Curries Koatanui Stud, winning easily from the Broiefort filly Capine, who finished very courageously. The winner is , a filly by Spiral from Curtain, a Thespian mare who had previously given the Turf eight winners, Smoke Screen, Pelmet, Curtail, and Damask in New 'Zealand, and Cortina, Loud Applause, Gladswood, and Colonel Post in Australia. RAKANUI ALL THE WAY. Jumping away smartly from No. 1 position, Rakanui led all the way in the Higgle Handicap to register a commanding win. Although topweight, he revelled in the going and when asked ran right away from Jljord Cavendish, who had followed him throughout. Aurora's Star repeated her performance of the opening day by drifting to the rear about half a mile from home and then coming home solidly, just failing to be second. Proclamation was fourth, after being handy throughout, with Pekoe and Lambourn next, the last-named pair having weak- , ened after being nicely placed on the turn. • Winner of the open sprint on the first day of the Spring Meeting last; season, Duncannon's appearance on the present occasion was reserved till the second day. He beat a smart field of sprinters in the Owen Handicap. Battle Gain, who had quickly reached the front, Augment, and Poutatau were fighting it out at the distance when Duncannon ranged up on the outer to beat Augment home, with Battle Gain half a neck back. Poutatau was fourth, and then came Screen Star and Star Zone. It was a very attractive performance on the part of Duncannon ( and indicates that he is quite himself again. MAJORITY SUPERIOR. , In a big field of twenty runners in the Gonville Hurdles the first day's winner, Raana, was made favourite from Majority, but when Master Solway fell on the flat turning into the back Raana fell over him. The favourite was not in a good position at the time, however, and it is extremely doubtful if he would have figured in the finish. Majority, Lucullus Boy, and Colibri were in the leading division throughout, the first-named setting a fast pace to be clear all the way, and he won very comfortably from Lucullus Boy, who was chased home by Cuisinier, the latter making up a lot of leeway over the last half-mile. Colibri was several lengths.back fourth, and then came Vengeance, with Stella. Lux making a late appearance after being at the rear early. Staying on much better than he had done oh the opening day, Kanui te Pai scored narrowly in the Moutoa Hack Handicap from Red Dash, the latter finishing solidly to just fail to get the decision. All Bunsby, who ran up.on the turn, promised to be dangerous, but he could not sustain the effort, although he took fourth place, ahead of Auburn Lad, who, after being handy to the pacemaker, Great Night, topk. charge half a mile from home. Halley was in the picture to the distance, but his weight then told and he was fifth to finish. Myarion,. Te Oriko, Inform, and Val Pere all ran fair races, but Miss Leighon was a.complete disappointment, being last home. SCURRY TO HIGH CLASS. The big field of twenty runners'went to the post in the Spring Hack Handicap, and on the turn' for home the finish promised to rest between the favoured pair, Sweet Anne and Theatre, but over the final furlong ..High Class wore them down, to win going away. There was a big gap to Matalite, with Cherry, Hunter and Golden Moon next to finish. The winner improved on his first day's effort, and he should go to greate* heights. The Trial Handicap was productive of a great finish, Aqueduct getting through on the rails to beat Spliced by half a head, with Graeco-Roman a similar margin away. The last-named forged to the front within the first furlong, and turning for home was in charge from Roeon, with Courting looming up on the outside, Spliced and Aqueduct being in behind the leaders. Spliced ran up to Graeco-Roman at the distance, and the latter came out from the rails towards the challenger, enabling Aqueduct to work through on the inner and get up to win by a narrow margin from Spliced, with GraecoRoman practically on terms. Courting weakened into fourth, with Roeon ana Elusory next -to finish.. RESULTS IN DETAIL. Results (per Press Association) were: — Gonville Hack HuidleS, £150; 1% miles.— 2 Majority, y.ll (A.
