EMERGENCY FIRE HYDRANTS

The fitting of auxiliary hydrants to enable fire engines working near the waterfront to pump water from the harbour is proceeding rapidly. They have been installed at regular intervals along the waterfront side of Jervois and Customhouse Quays. The last to be completed was one at the Eastbourne Ferry Wharf gates, arid work is now in progress at the Lyttelton Ferry Wharf. Excavations for the pipe here disclosed a subsidence of the bank under the wharf and the piles of a longforgotten jetty, which used to run from solid ground near Government Buildings to the point where the excavation was made. The timber of the piles, which were covered over when the area was reclaimed, is still sound.

A child, David Dunn, of 51 Kauri Street, suffered scalds to his back and neck when he upset a pot of boiling water over himself last night. He was taken to hospital by the Free Ambulance,
