OVER 18,000 PRISONERS

(Rec. 11 a.m.) LONDON, May 21. The formal surrender of the Duke of Aosta at Amba Alagi and the capture of between 18,000 and 19,000 prisoners in this area are reported in a Cairo General Head-
quarters communique
The communique states that" the Duke of Aosta, accompanied by five generals and a number of other senior staff officers, formally surrendered yesterday, following the handing over of all their equipment in the Amba In the battle of the lakes south, of Addis Ababa which is now proceeding, the British troops are rapidly closing in on an enemy force consisting of the remnants of two divisions. Yesterday the British forward troops advancing from the south, after a sharp engagement with the enemy rearguard, captured an Italian brigadier and a number of prisoners.
In the north-east corner of Somaliland some hundreds of Italians who had taken refuge in a town have been captured.
