TO BE RESISTED
AMERICAN EFFORTS
ACQUISITION OF FRENCH
POSSESSIONS
MR. HULL'S REPLY
LONDON, May 20. The French Ambassador to Washington lEas informed the American Secretary of State, Mr. Hull, that France will resist any attempt to take over any part £>f her empire anywhere. He protested against the action of the United States in placing coast-
guards on French ships,
It is reported that Mr. Hull told the Ambassador that there could be no satisfactory relations between France -and the peaceful nations till the Vichy Government proved it was not under German domination. He also stated that all nations were satisfied that proHitler elements were in control of the Vichy Government,, and that it was up to the French to show that this impression was incorrect.
Mr. Hull denied a statement by the Tokio newspaper "Yomiuri Shimbun" alleging that the United States had sent a strong Note to French IndoChina warning her against alignment with the Axis.
A Tokio message says that the "Yomiuri" declared the warning was an expression of American antipathy towards Vichy, and also an attempt to disturb the Japanese Indo-Chinese rapprochement.—U.P.A.
