RUGBY FOOTBALL

MATCH WITH CANTERBURY

THE HUTT ARMY TEAM

Arrangements for a Canterbury representative team to meet Wellington in Wellington on August 2 were confirmed by last night's meeting of the management committee of the Wellington Rugby Union. Wellington is expected to send a team south for the return match early in September, The exact date is to be decided later. Members mentioned the fact that the Hutt (Army) senior second division team contained several All Blacks of provincial representatives. -This made the team as strong as any team in Wellington and certainly too strong for the second division of the senior grade, as was shown by their 56-0 defeat of Wellington, one of the stronger teams in that grade, last week. The matter was held over until the return of Mr. J. N. Millard, chairman of the Committee, who is at present on a trip north. Mr, Millard has been in touch with the military authorities, who are understood not to favour the team being promoted to the first division. The Seatoun junior first division team was recommended for promotion to senior second division by the junior advisory committee, on the understanding that the team is known as the Seatoun (Army) team and consists solely of players from the fort in that area. The committee. decided to ask the Seatoun Club whether these conditions were acceptable before making any decision. The junior advisory committee also recommended .that play at Porirua and Plimmerton grounds should start at 2.30 p.m.; that it was inadvisable to send a fourth grade representative team to the Wairarapa on the King's Birthday, and that the Griffiths memo-, rial competition should start on May: 31. All these recommendations were; accepted by the management commit-; tee.

One game of the senior competition round to be played on May 31, the Athletic-Wellington fixture, will be held over until the following Monday as a King's Birthday attraction at Athletic Park.
