PENNIES FROM HEAVEN

CITY PROCESSION

Although on a considerably restricted scale, particularly so far as bands were concerned, the repetition of the Queen C&rriiyal procession through the main streets of Wellington today was very much of a success for the patriotic funds. Proceedings were more informal than yesterday, and for that reason, probably, more pennies hurtled down from balconies. At times they were dangerous. A penny from the fifth floor of a high building has a sharp edge, and one soldier in battle dress was still collecting tnsnfully, although one hand was engaged in dabbing a bleeding cut on -his cheekbone.

There were several gaps in the procession, but no one could expect a procession of the splendour and magnitude of ■ yesterday's patriotic effort to be repeated within twenty-four hours. Large" crowds gathered in Willis Street and. Lambton Quay' well before the ■procession was scheduled to start, and Saturday morning shoppers had more than their usual difficulty in making their way around.

The procession today was headed, by the Police Pipe Band, a unit which is always popular with the public. Notable absentees among the bands were the R.N.Z.A.F. and other armed Forces bands, but the whole turn-out was most enjoyable. A.second dose of yesterday's heat must have been very trying to'those on.the floats, but their spirits were in tune with those of the public. '
