BANDSMEN COMPETE

QUARTETS AMD SOLOISTS

A band contest for quartets and junior solo players, arranged by the Wellington Bands' Association, took place in the Town Hall on Saturday. It was organised by the secretary of the association, Mr. J. C. King; the judge was Lieutenant W. H. Osborne, conductor of the Timaru Municipal Band; the supervisors were Messrs. C. Patchett and J. Curamings, Wellington.

AH competitors played, their own selections. From the quartets, heard in the afternoon, four were recalled for the evening.' Members of- the winning quartet were Mr. A. O. Kaye, and his sons, Messrs. G., H., and V. Kaye, all of the Lower Hutt Municipal Band. The junior solos were all heard in the evening. The judge, Lieutenant Osborne, said that the standard of playing throughout the contest was high.

Prizes were presented by the Mayor of Lower Hutt, Mr. J. W. Andrews, who has given a shield for the winning quartet. . ■[

Quartet. —Lower Hutt Municipal ("Wagner"), 80 points, 1; Artillery No. 1 ("Baby Sweetheart"), 76 points, 2; Lower Hutt Civic No. 3 ("Comrades in Arms"), 75 points, 3 equal; For. Nicholson ("Comrades in Arms"), 75 points, 3 equal.

Junior Solo.—A -section, under 12: J. Moore, Upper Hutt Municipal ("Silver Threads"), 60 points, 1; L. Davies, Lower Hutt Municipal ("Lullaby"), 56 points, 2 equal; W. Keene, Lower Hutt Municipal ("Home, Sweet Home"),' 56 points, 2 equal.

B Section, 12.-to 15.— W. Moore, Upper Hutt Municipal ("Old Refrain"}, 72 points, 1; P. Legg,' Boys' Institute ("Aye Maria"), 71 points, 2; L. Evans, Lower Hutt Civic ("Perfect Day"), "0 points, 3. .
