SERVICE AT SEA

(To the Editor.) Sir,—l would be grateful for the opportunity to endorse whole-heartedly the letter of "Ex Second Mate" in bringing forward a really sensible proposal which would enable ex-officers of the Merchant Service to do valuable service in furthering the war effort, ahd helping to ensure security for this country. "Ex Second Mate" has voiced the feelings of many others, mostly family men, who have served in the Merchant Service but who have not en-, listed in local defence organisations, because we feel that our efforts would be of most value where we were trained —on the sea. I trust that the authorities will avail themselves of the offer made by "Ex Second Mate" on behalf of many ex-officers and engineers.—l am, etc., "EX SECOND ENGINEER." (To the Editor.) Sir I endorse/Ex-Second Mate's" remarks regarding the Home Guard,. I have offered my services in four departments, and so far am still waiting for a call. I am a time-expired Imperial naval, petty officer, also conversant with signals. Probably there are others waiting an opportunity to serve their country in the capacity most suitable to their ability. ;I should imagine this country needs more sea defence, with such men fes I have mentioned above, and moye coastal patrol boats. I think it woujd be unfair to those who have served ;n the Imperial forces and especially seafarers to be held up for service owingf to their age or for some other little cause, when they are probably healthy and strong.—l am, etc., , EX-PICKET BOAT COXSWAIN.1
