MILLION-DOLLAR DRIVE

Marshal Field, president of the United States Committee for the Care of European Children, announced in August that Mrs. Douglas Gibbons would serve as chairman of the women's division of the New York finance' committee, in the. drive for 1,500,000 dollars in the metropolitan area for the support of children evacuated from the war in England, states the "New York Times." Money received at the committee | headquarters, 215 Fourth Averjue, in cash, cheques, money orders, and even' stamps indicated a wide variety of people in all sections eager to help rescue the children of England from the war. SYMPATHETIC HELP. "I enclose a cheque for 50 dollars which represents the savings account we had started for my own little boy who died three years ago," a New York mother wrote. "We would like it tc go to help other little children, anonymously, in memory of him." "My donation is small," wrote a 10----year-old boy in a letter to which he pinned a dollar note, "but when added i to others which may also be small and, I hope, numerous, perhaps it can be a real help. I am much concerned about the wars and tragic situations all over the world today." From Brooklyn came a dollar money order with this note: "Being a mother and a grandmother, my heart is filled with love and pity for the children made desolate by this frightful war and my only regret is that the amount enclosed is not far greater than it is, but at least it is 'the widow's mite," and, remembering the words of our Saviour, 'She hath done what she could,' I offer it." About a third of the contributions are forwarded without comment.
