MINISTERS' WIVES REPORT
Mrs. W. Nash and Mrs. R. Semple jboth addressed the Wellington East Patriotic Committee recently at a large meeting in Kilbirnie. Mrs. Semple, as chairman of the committee, thanked members for their work during the year, and particularly- commended Margaret Crichton, Pam Packer, Hilary, and Joy McCaskey, and Thelma Unsworth for their contribution of £6 raised by two shop days. The committee's shop at 28 Coutts Street had been placed at the disposal of the girls by Mrs. H. Parish, whose generosity in this respect had largely contributed to the committee's success. Members of the "Margaret Semple" sewing circles in Kilbirnie and Miramar were also thanked for their fine work. The Women's War Service Auxiliary was described by Mrs. Semple, and Mrs. Nash told of the work of the Lower Hutt Patriotic Committee in sewing for the refugees, and of the beautiful work being done by a group of Frenchwomen in New Zealand for the Lady Galway Patriotic Guild. A letter of acknowledgment received from London had been the cause of; I much gratification to all who had worked so hard for the guild. Mrs. G. M. Unsworth, in thanking the speakers, said that there was work for every woman in the war effort. Victory could be expected only if every individual was prepared to put his back into the job. Before tea items were given by Misses Myra Sawyer, Kathleen Bond, Una Thomas, Billy Ponds, Margaret Knapp, Patricia Hairfield, Margaret Cousins, Master Frank Johnston, four pupils of Miss Una Weller. The 'afternoon closed with the community | singing of the Maori Battalion Song and "There'll Always Be An England." A talk on "superstitions" was given by Mrs. G. White at a recent well-i attended meeting of the Paekakariki Women's Institute. Mrs. Tutt presided and Mrs. Holliss reported on the half-yearly council meeting at Porirua. Good business was done at a "bring and buy" stall.
