CRIMES BY YOUTHS

JUDGE'S COMMENT "AN ALARMING POSITION" OFFICIAL FIGURES (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. The increase in dishonesty among the youth of the community received special reference in the Supreme Court today from Mr. Justice Northcroft, when two youths appeared for sentence on charges of housebreaking. With a view to stating the position fairly, said his Honour, he had had figures taken out for the past twelve months. They showed that of 34 offenders before the Court for crimes of dishonesty fifteen of them were from 17 to 21 years of age, six were from 21 to 25, and thirteen were above 25 years of age. "There must be some special reason why youths are committing these crimes," said his Honour. "They do not refer to the conversion of cars, but for the most part to deliberate crimes of dishonesty. "The position is alarming, and I consider it ray duty to draw the community's attention to the way young men are goingl." Ernest Leslie Edmond Green, aged 19, who is already on probation for theft, was sentenced to two years' Borstal, and Russell Norman Dixon was given probation for two years.
