INTENSIVE RAIDS
R.A.F. AID TO ARMY
(British Official Wireless.) (Received December 13, 12.20 p.m.)
RUGBY, December 12,
It is satisfactory to note that throughout the intensive operations by the Royal Air Force in the Western Desert during the past 24 hours only one Royal Air Force machine has failed to return. One aircraft which was reported missing on December 10 has now returned safely to its base.
Both bombers and fighters have supported the.Army's offensive, attacking enemy troop concentrations and bombing enemy advanced aerodromes. Several tons of bombs were dropped on Sollum, while enemy landing grounds at Gambut, Axeid, Menastir, El Adem, El Gubbi, Derna, Tmimi, and .El Gazala were raided during the day and a number of enemy aircraft on the ground were destroyed. Full details of these raids, however, are not yet available.
Fighters destroyed six enemy aircraft in combat, and it is probable that two more shared the same fate. One squadron accounted for four and two "possibles." These were one 579, three CR42's, and two Bredas.
