25TH PRIZE-GIVING DEREMMY
Last night Scots College held its twenty-fifth annual prize-giving. There was a large attendance. Mr. A. L. Wall, chairman of the Board of Governors, presided. The school and sports prizes for the year were presented by Mrs. Gladstone Hughes. Those present included the Minister of Public Works (Mr. Semple) and Mrs. Semple and Mrs. P.Fraser. The Prime Minister (Mr. Fraser) sent an apology. Recalling the ; beginnings of the school in. 1916, the chairman said that from a first roll of six boys, whose ages ranged from eight to 15 years, the col;lege had grown into a school of over 200, with evei^y prospect of the numIbers. increasing. Mr. Wall expressed •the confident nope that it would be possible to btiild in the hear future the. assembly hall so badly needed. Abour ■£6000 woutyi be required, and if half i of that sum could be collected within the' next few months, the board would be in a petition to make arrangements to commf/nce the work. ! Theßejv. F. Gladstone-Hughes, 8.A., !gave a lirief address. "We are living lin dangerous, critical times," he said; ! "and democracy is passing through a ; fiery ordeal. We know that the young men who have gone oiit'to-fight the • 1 fight .for democracy on the field of I battle- are giving a splendid account ;of themselves." He expressed pleasure,at the progress of church schools, wh^ch, he said, provided a necessary varaety in the educational system. The principal prizes were as follows:—Dux of lower school (gold medal presented by Mr. J. S.Land), A. M. Salek; dux of upper school (gold medal presented by Messrs. Mayer and Kean), E. T. Lang; public speaking, senior, B. C. Morrison; runner-up T Corkill; junior, C. Martin: runner-uo L. McDonald.
