THE WISE COURSE
ADVICE TO SOVIET
JAPANESE DIPLOMAT "
TOKIO, October 15
The Hsinking correspondent of th« "Asahi Shimbun" reports that tha new Ambassador to the Soviet, LieutGeneral Tatekawa, who left for Mossow, said, "Japan does not need to worry about the reported British and. American overtures to the Soviet for [a rapprochement." He claimed it was a wiser policy for the Soviet to be friendly with neighbouring Japan, than "shake hands with distant America." The Soviet, undoubtedly, was aware that it could not ignore Japan's naval strength, and that it was also difficult to continue trade with America without previously securing Japanese-Soviet relations.
Lieut.-General Tatekawa added that he would start his negotiations with the Soviet Union- with: a clean* ; slate. and was not taking over where th« former Ambassador left off.
