COMPENSATION AWARDED
Compensation amounting to £203 6s 5d has been awarded by Mr. Justice O'Regan in the Compensation Court to James Leckie, who suffered an injured spine and fractured ribs when he fell while unloading timber on the Wairangi for the Shaw Savill and Albion Co., Ltd., on September 6, 1938. He claimed that he had been incapacitated since the accident and would be permanently partially disabled. He had received £4 2s 6d a week as compensation,, but under a Magistrate's Court order payments ceased on January 16, 1940. The defence denied that there was any permanent disability.
Michael Geary, who had the great toe on his left foot fractured when a brick fell on it during work for the Union Steam Ship Company of New Zealand, Ltd., on August 30, 1939, has been awarded £133 13s 8d as compensation. Payments of £3 18s 3d a week as compensation stopped on March 19 last under a Magistrate's Court order. The plaintiff claimed that his total disability would continue for some time and that he might be partially disabled permanently. The company alleged that the plaintiff had been able to return to his usual work at the time of the Magistrate's Court order, and had not since suffered from an;y injury that decreased his earning capacity. In each case Mr. O. C. Mazengarb appeared for the plaintiff and Mr. H. E. Evans for the defendant.
