SELASSIE'S THRONE
BRITISH POLICY
COMPLETE LIBERTY]
COMMITMENTS WITH ITALY
(British Official Wireless.) (Received August 14, 1 p.m.) RUGBY, August 13. The Government's attitude toward* the position of Haile Selassie and the recognition of the Italian conquest of Abyssinia was stated in the House of Lords by Lord Caldecote, who said tha Government let it be known that in view of Italy's act of deliberate aggression in resorting to war against this country, it felt entitled to reserve complete liberty of action in regard to any commitments entered into in the past with the Italian Government relating to the north and east African and Mediterranean areas. This declaration covered the de jure recognition under the Anglo-Italian agreement of 1938 of Italy's conquest of Abyssinia. He stated the Government attached full importance to the question of recognising Selassie as the lawful ruler of Abyssinia and the possibility of giving him assistance to overthrow the Italian aggressor and reoccupy his throne.
