PREVIOUS ACCIDENT
Eighteen persons were killed when the Douglas monoplane Kyeema crashed at 200 miles an hour into Mount Dandenong, 28 miles from Melbourne, on October 25, 1938. The victims included Mr. C. A. S. Hawker, M.P., of South Australia, Mr. L. S. Abrahams, K.C., of Sydney, and three women, one of them being an air hostess. It was revealed that the Lorenz short-wave radio navigation beacon at Essendon Aerodrome, Melbourne, which had been installed for more than a year, had not been operating, and the Kyeema had flown 30 miles past the aerodrome in dense clouds. It was stated that the beacon had never operated, as final tests had not been completed. Experts considered that had it been in use the •disaster would have been averted. A public inquiry was ordered by the Federal authorities.
