GLUT OF WHEAT

CANADIAN MARKET

EMERGENCY PROBLEM

(Received August 14, 1.15 p.m.)

OTTAWA, August 13.

The Trade Minister, Mi. James MacKinnon, indicated that the Government might be forced to declare a national emergency to deal with the glutted wheat market as a result of a bumper crop estimated at 500,000,000 bushels, one of the immediate problems being financial. Farmers were compelled xo ihold their grain on their farms because of the lack of storage. j Mr. MacKinnon emphasised that the ! problem was of such an emergency ! character that it was most likely that the Governments of the prairie provinces would be required to pass legislation to permit Federal action to be taken. Mr. MacKinnon, has appointed an advisory committee to the Canadian Wheat Board, comprising representatives o£ the prairie growers, exporters, millers, shippers, and consumers.
