SOUTHERLY CHANGE

IMPROVEMENT TOMORROW

Special forecast for Wellington:— A temporary change to moderate to fresh southerlies tonight. Weather showery at first, but conditions probably improving tomorrow. Cooler temperatures. The general forecast for the Dominion as a whole is for moderate to fresh south-westerly to westerly winds over the southern half of the South Island, and winds from that quarter will become almost general within the next twenty-four hours. In the eastern districts of the North Island the weather will be fair to fine at first, but otherwise it will be cloudy and with the advance of the south-westerly change will become showery. Temperatures will be cooler, with some snow on the I South Island ranges.

During the last twenty-four hours a depression has advanced rapidly across the southern Tasman Sea on to the South Island. Moderate to fresh winds from a southerly quarter have prevailed over the North Island, while northerlies have gradually freshened about and south of Cook Strait. Conditions over the North Island have been unsettled, with widespread but mainly light rain, chiefly in eastern districts. Apart, however, from some scattered showers in Taranaki and the Auckland Peninsula, the weather this morning had improved considerably. Over most of the South Island the weather has been fair to fine, but a change to moderate to strong southwesterlies had advanced by 9 a.m. today as far north as Timaru and Greymouth and rain was falling thence southward. Temperatures in the south have become cooler.

Yesterday morning was cloudy in Auckland and dull in Christchurch, with a light drizzle, but otherwise the weather in the four main centres was fair to fine. The south-westerly change had reached Dunedin early this morning, being followed by rain and cooler temperatures. In the three other centres cloud has increased considerably. The maximum temperature in Wellington yesterday reached 59.4 degrees, while the minimum last night fell to 44 degrees.
