S. MOSES WINS TITLE
The Wellington provincial amateur billiards championship title for 1940 was won last night by S. Moses, of the G.P.O. Pastimes Club, who, in the final, beat A. Armstrong, of the Federal Club. During the early stages of the game play was even, and it was not until the 200 mark had been passed that an appreciable gap between the two competititors was opened up. This came about largely through a fine break of 55 by Moses, who followed up later with a 48 and established a commanding lead. Armstrong's attempts at a recovery were not very successful, his form dropping below that which enabled him to keep pace with Moses earlier in the game. Moses won by 500 points to 382. Best breaks were: By Moses, 41, 25. 40, 28. 55. 46. 35; by Armstrong, 21, 27, 29, 29, 21, 34. 44.
At the conclusion of the tournament. Mr. A. Cohen, chairman of the Wellington Billiards' Association., introduced the president. Mr. I. Hart, who congratulated the winner and also paid tribute to the others who participated. Prizes were presented as follows: — Gold medal, S. Moses: set of balls used in final, A. Armstrong; Shield. Pastimes Club (Mr. Ward); billiard cue (for the player, other than the winner, making the highest break). R. Stuart (Petone W.M.C.). Appreciation was expressed of the facilities offered by Messrs. Billiards, Ltd., for the tournament and of the duties carried out by Sergeant JMeldrum as referee. For the B grade championship entries are due by Monday next.
