GENERAL'S THANKS
NEW ZEALAND APPLES
FIVE THOUSAND CASES
The National Patriotic Fund Board has received through Army Headquarters a cable from Major-General B. C. Freyberg, Officer Commanding the Second New Zealand Expeditionary Force, expressing appreciation of the 5000 cases of apples sent by the board in the ships which carried the Second Echelon from the Dominion. MajorGeneral Freyberg's cable is as follows:—
'.'Cases of apples from New Zealand opened up in excellent condition. Very much appreciated by all ranks and proved a welcome addition to the normal supplies."
When the apples were shipped the understanding was that they would reach the First Echelon in Egypt. ;but after the departure of the transports their destination w.as changed, the ships eventually .in the United Kingdom. Although r the First Echelon men did not receive the apples and the consignment of gift parcels sent for them with the -fruit, it is gratifying that they have been of value to the Second .Echelon. Since advice was (first received of the arrival of the Second Echelon in the United Kingdom together with the goods intended for the First Echelon, it has been possible for the National Patriotic Fund Board, although shipping is a problem in these days, to make fresh supplies of comforts available for the First Echelon. An additional sum of money was also remitted to Egypt for the purchase of comforts.
