RUGBY FOOTBALL
POSTPONED GAMES
CHAIRMAN EXPLAINS
The unusual action of postponing all last Saturday's Rugby was explained by the chairman, Mr. J. N. Millard, at last night's meeting of the management committee of the Wellington Rugby Union.
This was the first time for many years that all senior fixtures had been put off, said Mr. Millard. The reason was that the city reserves were not available, owing to their condition, so it was not possible to play. In the past games had been transferred to the Lyall Bay ground when all other grounds were unplayable, but because the Exhibition buildings now covered this area that was no longer possible. "Therefore we had no option but to postpone the senior fixtures," Mr. Millard added. "There seems to be some impression that this was done in order to get a better gate for the Wellington-Athletic match." This was certainly not the case, however, for the games would have been played had the grounds been available. The committee decided ' that _ the senior championship would be decided by the matches on August 24. The position of the Hardham Cup competition will be reviewed after the matches on that date.
Veitch was appointed captain of the Wellington A representative team to play Hawke's Bay at Wellington on Saturday and Gunn vice-captain. i White (Petone) was appointed capItain of the Wellington B representative team to play Wairarapa in Carterton on Saturday, and Burns (JohnIsonville) vice-captain. Mr. R.\J. Burke was appointed manager of the Wellington B team. ! The Centurions Club wrote advising that it was proposed to play two or three games this year on similar lines to those played last year. The club suggested that it might play a mixed team from members of teams in the senior competition. The committee decided to reply that it would arrange a day for a match. The Taranaki Union wrote advising that their team would arrive by the New Plymouth-Wellington express on Friday, August 30, and would return on Monday, September 2. Advice was received: that the vWairarapa Union had decided to play their match, at Carterton, on August 17, at 2.30 p.m. Permission for matches to be played was granted as follows: —Rongotai College first fifteen v.
