OPINIONS DIFFER
BEAU VITE'S APPEARANCE
(From "Vedette.") . SYDNEY, August 9. M. McCarten has been booked up for one of the best of the three-year-olds, the Victorian colt Lucrative, who won the A.J.C. Sires' Produce Stakes last autumn at Randwick. McCarten will ride the colt in the Hobartville Stakes at Randwick on August 31 and in the Derby. Lucrative is due in Sydney this weekend, so will have plenty of time to settle down. , Beau Vite has been closely inspected since his arrival at Randwick, and opinions vary concerning his appearance. He looks bigger and stronger than when here last spring, but may be a trifle plainer; at least he does not show as much quality as other Beau Pere horses. Possibly he is none the worse for his lack of good looks, being faced with stayers' tasks. However, the Sydney trainer, F. McGrath, is well satisfied with the condition of his charge. , , , . Dashing Cavalier, one of the best of last year's three-year-olds, opened his winning account at Moorefield last Saturday. He had little to spare at the finish from Sologram, but finished stoutly. Dashing Cavalier and Nightbeam are the two best horses owned by Mr. F. W. Hughes, who is Sydney's most extensive racing man with a team of over 40 horses.
Yours Truly was well beaten in the race won by Dashing Cavalier, and when in receipt of 21b. He will have to show vast improvement to profit at the weights he is receiving. Pink Coat is represented by a goodlooking three-year-old from Pacify in Pink Un. This colt has not raced a great deal but has shown some promise. He is owned by trainer J. W. Cook, who was the fortunate buyer of St. Constant for £1.
Brazen Lad developed a costly bleeding attack at Moorefield last Saturday. He was backed as a certainty for the principal handicap and was going like one until about four furlongs from home. Then he suddenly lost ground and finished behind the field with blood streaming from both nostrils. This was the first demonstration of weakness and may not recur. He is a useful four-year-old from the Reading stable, and was to have been sent off to Melbourne next week.
