MANAGER'S THANKS
EXHIBITION TRANSPORT
"It is particularly gratifying to me to record that during this busy period officers and men alike rose to the occasion and performed their duties in the best interests of the city," stated the General Manager of the Tramways Department, Mr. M. Cable, in a bulletin to the tramways staff thanking them for their co-operation during the Exhibition period. "Throughout the six months not a single serious accident occurred and, apart from the power trouble on the closing night, when the traffic handled was a record, not a single hitch arose. I desire to thank all concerned for the loyal service rendered to the city and for the manner in which they maintained the best traditions of the Wellington tramway undertaking."
Mr. Cable said that, though the estimated attendance at the Exhibition was not reached, the number of passengers carried by the city services was approximately 4,250,000 more than in the corresponding period last year. The problem of providing staff to maintain a heavy service for fifteen hours daily presented exceptional difficulties, but after prolonged negotiations an amicable agreement between the management and representatives of the union enabled the department to draw up rosters to meet conditions.
