BASLE, May 13.

French artillery and Allied bombs shattered part of the Istein tunnel, which is south from Schliengen and under Germany's "Gibraltar of the Rhine," resulting in the closure of a vital section of the Siegfried Line railway.

Schliengen is on the German bank of the Rhine, due east of Mulhausen and ten miles north of Basle.
