FAIR AND COLD

SHOWERS STILL POSSIBLE

Special forecast for Wellington:—

Moderate to fresh but decreasing southerly winds.

A few showers still possible, but the weather otherwise will be fair although cold.

The general forecast for the Dominion as a whole is for moderate to fresh southerly to south-westerly winds. Winds will be strong today in some exposed positions, but later will decrease gradually. The weather in most districts will be changeable, with brief showery periods and fine intervals. Temperatures will be cold, with snow on the ranges and possibly with hail or sleet in the south.

A slight disturbance followed by a rapidly moving secondary is crossing the Dominion, while an extensive anticyclone is now centred over southeastern Australia. Winds have been westerly or south-westerly in direction, but over the South Island this morning they were more definitely from the south and along the coast were strong at times. It has been showery in the west and in the far south, and showers extended last night to the east of the South Island, but the weather otherwise has been fine. In the south temperatures have become cold again.

It was cloudy in Auckland yesterday with occasional light showers and a south-westerly wind, but Wellington, Christchurch, and Dunedin had fine weather with light winds. Wellington had nine hours of bright sunshine, with temperatures ranging between 58.8 and 42.1 degrees, and five points of rain were recorded. A southerly change, with showers and colder temperatures, occurred in Dunedin late yesterday afternoon, reached Christchurch overnight, and affected Wellington this morning.
