PAYMENT OF TAXES IN

BRITAIN

(British Official Wireless.)

RUGBY, February 7.

So large was the response to the request of the Chancellor of the Exchequer for early payment of taxes that there is now a slackening of the rate at which revenue is coming in. Nevertheless, last week total ordinary revenue amounted to £47,759,985 and total expenditure £32,882,932, compared with £46,799,469 and £18,009,847 respectively in . 1939. Income tax realised £34,763,000 as against £32,590,000.

In the eight remaining weeks £211,028,721 has to be collected, so that the weekly average can fall considerably before there is danger of Estimates not being realised.
