A POPULAR GATHERING

PAHIATUA MEETING

TOMORROW'S FORM HORSES

The Pahiatua Racing Club's Annual Meeting on the Pahiatua course is a popular gathering for racegoers from all the surrounding districts, and there are useful fields for the opening day of this year's fixture tomorrow. A number of horses who raced at Wellington and Ashhurst are among the acceptors, and there is an addition of fresh blood that may upset some of the form. • With the recent spell of fine weather, occasionally broken by beneficial periods of light rain, the course promises to be in splendid order. The Bush district seldom becomes really dry and such weather as is at present being experienced should have the grounds in near perfect state. The betting will be under the singlepool system, and two dividends are practically assured in all fields. EVEN CUP ISSUE. The feature event of the first day's card is the Pahiatua Cup, a race that has sometimes been won by horses who have gone on to highest honours, one of them being Oratrix, though more often it has been' taken by» the average provincial handicapper, including the redoubtable Nukumai. Quite a number of the winners too have been better-known sprinters, but there are none of his category in tomorrow's contest." . The likely favourite is Lady Montana, who ran her best race since her resumption after a two months spell when just missing a place m the Summer Handicap at Trentham on Monday. Others who will be well supported are the improving Galteemore (second in the Ashhurst Cup), Gay (finishing on in his second outing at Trentham), and Royal Star II (who at last got back on thewinning list over seven furlongs at Ashhurst). The smaller field also gives Tidewaiter a chance, as his failures at Trentham were due to his getting into all the trouble going. Granvale and Corroboree are in-and-out customers who might upset tfie better form. The other open event is the Eketahuna Handicap, in which Royal Star II again appears. It would be no impossible thing for this horse to win the double, as he is very fit at present, but his connections may keep him tor this race and allow Le Toquet to represent them in the Cup. Lord Cavendish stod Life Guard are improvers who have lately been in the places, and Solaria was a winner at Hastings at the New Year. Royal Minstrel has surprised before first up after • spells. The most disappointing field of the day is that for. the Nursery Handicap, in which there is practically, no form. Army Girl has attracted notice on the tracks -at New- Plymouth, . and Nationalist and Lady Govern- have been in third place in poor class fields. Events for the hacks, highweight horses, and maidens complete the card. In the hack races horses m form include White Rajah, Liridrunv Sky Limit (Konini), White Rajah, Trench Law, and Acrobat (Hamua), and Te Ore, Kehua, Newbury Queen, and Debretts (Makuri). The likeliest in the Ballance Highweight may .be Small B&y:- Thrasos;- Little Ruling Star, and the best of the maidens appear, to be Augment, Master Solway, Daregain, Moradabad, and Don Quex.
