Jumble Sale Tomorrow Night.
A jumple sale will be held by the . Kelburn branch of the Red Cross Society at St. Peter's Church Hall (corner of Willis and Ghuznee Streets) tomorrow night at 7 o'clock. The jumble sale is in aid of the Kelburn Red Cross funds.-Many very useful articles have been collected, and a visit will, undoubtedly, be well worth while. Entertainment Tonight at St. Mark's. Tonight at 8 o'clock an excellent entertainment will be given by pupils of St. Mark's School in the Parish Hall. The previous "Mother - Hubbard's Party" was such a success that •it ii being repeated by special request. The programme will also include a play, "The Great Muster,"' amd dances - ar» ranged by. Miss Marie Walker. Leaving for Australia. Mrs. H. E. Avery was hostess at* very pleasant afternoon party 'given recently at her residence in honour of . Miss Linda Skelley, who is leaving shortly for Australia. The guests were * entertained with competitions and several delightful items were given by Miss 'G. Nannestad.. The guest of „■ honour was the recipient of many at- t tractive handkerchiefs. Among thosa present were Mesdames Avery, jun. t Skelley, Wilkinson, Machell, Shaw,, ' Denby, Arnold, Ross, and Mis* Nannestad. The Owen Street Nurseryv. Mrs. Porter presided at the recent meeting of the management committee of the Residential Nursery, Owen \ Street. A warm welcome'was extend- ■ ed to the new members, Mrs., Dunn (president of the Kelburn-Northland branch), Mrs. Hill (secretary of, the ' same branch), Mrs. Peterson (secre- ( tary, Lower Hutt branch), and Mrs. Wilson (treasurer of the Lower Hutt branch). Sincere thanks were expressed for gifts in kind- from the following:—Mrs. McMillan, Mrs. Ross, Berhampore branch, Mrs. Brown, Miss Sfeeppard, Mrs. Beales, Mrs. Swanson, 9 Mrs. Hudson, Miss Whittle, Mrs. Boyd, Khandallah-Ngaib (30 dozen eggs), Mr. Piper (301b of soap). ,Reports from . , all ttie tranches were most cheering, showing ■ enthusiasm, zeal, and enter- , • -i prise. Gifts of flowers were presented ] to the. president and secretary of the ' . I nursery by Mrs. B. F. Gardiner, and Mrs. A. Longmore. At the close of the ■ meeting the executive committee entertained the management' committee to afternoon tea at the Pioneer Club. Mrs. Tripp (chairman of the executive, nursery committee), in a humorous - speech welcomed the newly-elected officers, and thanked them for their fine work' during the year. Mrs. Hooson (president of Lower Hutt branch) -presented Mrs. Tripp with a beautiful-floral tribute. • ' An Informal Afternoon. The Khandallah branch of the League $)f • Mothers held its final meeting for the year recently. It vvas a pleasantly . -: informal afternoon functionY-The presi- - dent, Mrs. E. S. Mirams, gave a short , talk, and spoke of the manner in which -'■ the league could assist in war work. . ■ ' Mrs. Mirams read the Dominion>president's Christmas message, published in .. the league's magazine,'and Mrs. Gray-, read extracts from "Brave Days,"-the inspiring stories of New' Zealand's women -pioneers. Miss Olga Burton i.' sang two songs, her sister'playing th« . accompaniments, and the singing circle rendered two items and Christmas1 ' carols. Afternoon tea was served and:" ; ' the_.children .were given a happy parly ''. r in the creche. « ~ ' ' Brea&ng-up Ceremony.\ Splendid entertainment was provided for the members of the Stokes Valley League of Mothers at the break-1 ing-up ceremony for 1939. Crimson rhododendrons and ixias formed the , stage setting. After the opening by the president, Mrs. H. F. Lowe, a ) pianoforte solo, was given. by Mrs. Greig, Mrs. Catherine Smith contri--buted a musical monologue, Mrs. Cording accompanying, and Mrs. W. Burr gess sang. . Mrs. W. Huse gave -a vivid description of her recent travels in Europe. . An. instructive foliage guess- : ing competition tias won l by_ Mrs. ' Boyce. Recognition was made by, the ) president -of Mrs. Stephens^ ' invalu- .'. / abi^and untiring services to the branch since its inception. A distinguished ' visitor, Mrs. McLeod, .president of the North Otagp Federation of Women's In- :. stitutcs, briefly addressed the meeting, touching on valuable work in re- •. \ afforestation being done by the instil { tute members in her district. > Final Gathering. _. ' The Miramar branch of the Ne^t - ( Zealand Union of Townswomeji'* Guild (Inc.) held a social evening re- s cently at St. Aidan's Hall. Members.. were asked to invite their menfolk with the. result that-there were over 140 '^ guests present. The hall was decorated v with' bowls of flowers, and greenery- . I The function, which was a marked J success, terminated the activities of, the \ branch for this year. Mrs. Bradstock, president, was hostess, and welcomed the" guests of honour, Mrs. J. Pow and Mrs. Kinsman," Dominion president and Dominion secretary respectively. Items.. ' were given by the singing circle,. Miss Jamieson, Master. Walker, tha dramatic circles, Mesdames Satherley, - McKendry, Carver, arid Kay wood. Supper was served and the social concluded with dancing.
