ZEAL FOR BOTANY
LETTER FROM LORD BLEDISLOE
Lord Bledisloe, on reading the annual report of the New Zealand Plant Preservation Society, writes to the society's president (Mr. Hope B. Gibbins) from Lydney Park, under date October 10, a tribute to the work of the late Dr. Cockayne. "The enthusiasm which the report radiates," writes Lord Bledisloe, "makes me long to take ship without delay to the Dominion and 'sit at the feet' of some of your experts as ah active resident New Zealand botanist. I am particularly delighted to know that Cockayne's inspiring work in initiating the Otari open air museum is being carried on and developed, and that the society is emphasising the folly (indeed the wickedness) of felling and burning steep hillside country. It is a crime. ... My heart is with you and the society in carrying on with such obvious zeal ..nd energy the good work.of preserving, recording, -and propagating the incomparable treasures of your native bush and your alpine plants."
