FORCE WITH FORCE

CALL TO GERMAN ARMY

HITLER'S PROCLAMATION

"END THIS LUNACY"

BERLIN, September 1

The text of a proclamation broadcast by Herr Hitler at 5.40 a.m. by the official German" wireless station said:— "The Fuhrer has issued the following proclamation to the army:— '"The Polish State has refused the peaceful settlement which I desire, and has appealed to arms. Germans In Poland are persecuted with bloody terror, and driven from their houses. . .." 'The Series of violations of the frontier is intolerable to a great Power and proves that Poland is no longer willing to respect the frontier of the Reich. "'ln order to end this lunacy, I have no other choice than to meet force with force from now on. The German army will fight the battle for the honour and vital rights of the reborn Germany with hard determination. I expect that every soldier mindful of the great traditions of the eternal German soldiery will ever remain conscious that he is a representative of the National Socialist Greater Germany. "'Long live our people and our Reich.'" Extra editions of newspapers carry the huge headlines: "Force Against Force," but there is no official indication of any declaration of war. It may also be pointed out that Herr Hitler's proclamation does not contain any instruction or direction to action.
