VOSSELER SHIELD

WIN FOR SCOTTISH

C. Bruce (Scottish), with a lead of about 300 yards, was the first man home, and the Scottish Club won the Vosseler Shield inter-club harrier rae*, which was held from Lyall Bay on Saturday afternoon. The race, one of the major events of the harrier season, is a tenmile teams race, the first ten men of a club to finish forming the winning team. Conditions were perfect.

The course led along the beach to Moa Point, over the hills behind the golf links to Monorgan Road, along Ira Street, Devonshire Road, Caledonia Street, Calabar Road, and Coutts Street to Onepu Road and round again. On the. second lap the runners went from Coutts Street to Queen's Drive, and finished at Freyberg Street.

One hundred and one runuers participated, and by the time they had reached Moa Point the bunch had started to break up. At Onepu Road, at the end of the first lap, they were well spread out. The first five to finish the first lap vrere C. Bruce, S. Woodley, and A. Bourgeois (all Scottish), R. Scrymgeour (University), and W. Owens (Wellington). Bruce had a good lead and he maintained it till the end. The first three men to finish the full course were Bruce, Owens, and Bourgeois. Bruce's time at the end of the first lap was 29min 19sec, and he finished the race in 59min lsec, a good performance. The winning team (Scottish) consisted of the following runners :—Bruce, Bourgeois, Woodley, P. Kennedy, A. i. Stevens, R. Violich, G. Foster, F. Silver, 3,. Garty, J. Jlaturin. They came in "in that order. The Scottish Club gained 9" points, Presbyterian were second .with 243 points, and Wellington third with 358 points. After the race the donor, Mr. h\ W. Vos-; seler, presented the shield to Mr. E. Ballantyne, j president of the Scottish Club, and the medals and ribbons to the individual runners. The entries were not as large as in previous years. This was mainly because the race was held later in the season than usual. BAPTIST CLUB. The Baptist Harrier Club held a run of about five miles on Saturday from the home of the Rev. H. E. Edridge, Kauri Street, Miramar. The trail led along Darlington Road, up to the top of the hill by the brick kiln, down the other side of the hill on to the beach, and around the point into Seatoun. The runj ners then went along to Worser Bay and over the hill via Awa Street. Runs-in were held I from Para Street, and resulted :—Fast pack: D. McFadyen 1, R. Wadham 2. G. Voller 3. Intermediate pack: D. Kitchingman 1, J. Grigg 2, iD. Hogan 3. Slow pack: F. Farrow 1, M. F. Smith 2, E. Wright 3.
