CANCER PROBLEM

STATISTICAL RESEARCH

AUCKLAND DEPARTMENT

(By Telegraph—Press Association.)

AUCKLAND, June 12

"We are very grateful for the cooperation and assistance that has been given throughout the Auckland Province in the appeal for funds to establish a cancer statistical research department in Auckland," said the Mayor (Sir Ernest Davis) • when announcing that the appeal for £1500 made by the Auckland division of the British Empire Cancer Campaign Society had resulted in that sum being exceeded. Sums collected in outside centres brought the total to £1514 with some small collections yet to come.

A special sub-committee which was set up to draw up the conditions of appointment of a statistical research officer has already met, and the secretary said no time would be lost in calling for applications. These are to be called in the four main centres and in Sydney and Melbourne. By the time the appointment is made an office, which the hospital board is to provide, will be ready for occupation.

The budget for the year 1939-40, which the' sub-committee was given to work upon, provided for a salary for the research officer of £750, rising to £1000, travelling expenses £150. wages of record clerk-typist £200, office expenses £100, and contingencies £100.
