MR. BLEWMAN RETURNED
MAJORITY OF 193
The Mayoral election in the Upper Hutt Borough on Saturday resulted in the return of Mr. J. Blewman with a majority of 193 over Mr. J. Purvis. The election was necessitated by the death of Mr. Peter Robertson and there were five candidates. The official recount which is taking place this afternoon, cannot affect the placings. Of a total of 3350 electors only 1645 voted. The figures are as follows: — J. Blewman 693 J. Purvis 500 C. A. Rendle 215 S. P. Keys 123 A. J. McCurdy H* Informal .... i 5 The result of the previous election, held in May of last year, was as follows: —P. Robertson (Labour), .860; J. Purvis, 518; A. J. McCurdy, 315; S. F. Keys, 202.
Mr. Blewman, who was Deputy Mayor under Mr. Robertson, was a Labour nominee. His election as Mayor will leave a vacancy on the Borough Council and another by-election will be necessary.
