WIN FOR LABOUR

BY-ELECTION RESULT

Labour retained the Christchurch South seat on Saturday in the by-elec-tion occasioned by the death of Mr. E. J. Howard, Mr. R. M. Macfarlane, Mayor of Christchurch, defeating the National Party candidate, Mr. M. E. Lyons.

Mr. Macfarlane polled 7492 votes and r Mr. Lyons 3779, with 546 postal and absentee votes to come. In the General Election last year, Mr. Howard polled . 9885 votes,and the National Party candidate, Mr. Gladstone Ward, 3890.

Mr. Macfarlane's majority in a smaller poll on Saturday was 3713, on the'votes so. far counted, and Mr. Howard Had a majority of 5995.

In only two of the twenty booths did Mr, Lyons secure a majority vote, though at some of the other booths he increased the previous National vote. Only at one booth did the Labour vote show any gain on last election.
