Rugby League senior matches in Wellington on Saturday resulted as follows:— , Central 43, Newtown 14. Petone 21, St. George 18. Miramar 20, Randwick 11. The position of the teams in the competition
CENTRAL V. NEWTOWN
Central gained a decisive win, over Newtown in .'the .senior Rugby League, game at Newtown. Park. Fielding a more experienced forward pack than their opponents they played hard, bustling football. The score was Central 43. Newtown 14.
The main reaspns for Newtown's defeat were lack of training and bad tackling. However, there is good material as far as the players are concerned. Chalmers, Beaton, and McLennan being sound. Central have a good side this season and once the backs gain the ball they are hard to stop. The game was played at a fast pace, H. Cootes and J. Cootes (Central) providing some of the high lights. Duff was prominent, his speed gaining him one well-desered try. Towards the end of the second spell Newtown commenced to make headway.
For Central, J. Cootes (3), Cooper (2), W. Hale, R. Hale (2), Clarke, Duff, and H. Cootes scored tries and R. Hale (4) and Cooper (1) converted. Drew, McCormick, Beaton, and Sara scored for Newtown, and McLennan converted a try.
MIRAMAR V. RANDWICK
At the Show Grounds, Miramar and Randwick gave a good exhibition of the code, Miramar winning by 20 points to 11. In the first half the winners won most of the scrums, and their backs had plenty of the ball. Excellent work by the Randwfck full-back, Cook, saved his side on several occasions. , Randwick were first to score, Berry • crossing from a scrummage near the line. Anderson converted. Miramar evened before half-time, when McDonald scored and Stanaway converted. 5-5. Shortly after the start of the second ispell, Wallace put Randwick in the lead with a try, but as a result of fast passing bouts Miramar scored twice. B. Minnoch and McDonald touching down. Stanaway converted both tries and kicked a penalty goal. Towards the end Johnson scored for Randwick and Anderson for Miramar. The referee was Mr. \V. McCaskill. I
PETONE V. ST. GEORGE
Petone met St. George at North Park, Petone.
Solid work by the Petorie term marked the opening stages of this match. St. George backs took a hand in attack and were the first to score when O'Connor went over in the corner. There was not much difference between the teams, both sides attacking in turn. Petone took the lead a minute before half-time, when Coman scored a good try. The half-time score was Petone 6, St. George 5. In the second spell, the game became fast and spectacular, both sides executing some fine attacking movements. Petone, however, continued to. hold the upper hand and when time was cailed the scores read: Petone 21, St. George 18. The referee was Mr. W. Simpson. Results in other grades were;—• ' RESERVE. Newtown 10, Central 4. ' Petone 22, St. George 3. Miramar 2, Randwick 2. JUNIOR. i Petone 13, St. George 9. Eastern Suburbs 23, Central 5. , Miramar won by default from Randwick. '
