MATCHES DESCRIBED

8-POINT MARGIN

WELLINGTON'S WIN

One of the most notable features of the match between Wellington and Wellington College Old Boys at Athletic Park was the number of penalty kicks awarded,'many of them against Wellington, who were In trouble In the scrums. Fortunately for Wellington, these kicks were not as expensive as tney might well have been. Baldwin, who has been in good kicking form for Old Boys, had an off day, apparently finding the wind tricky. As it was, Wellington won. well by 14 points to 6.

As a spectacle, the game did not produce the measure of bright play that was expected. There were some colourless periods in the second spell.

More constructive football was played by Wellington, who made a better all-round showIng. Their path to progress, however, was never easy. Old Boys' forwards "played their usual bustling type-of game and the backs also were lively. Taylor, at full-back, was a' big help to Wellington, playing a fine game throughout and scoring eight points off his boot.

Wellington had eight points on the board In the first eight minutes —a penalty goal by Taylor and a try by Thompson converted by Taylor. Near the end of the spell Veltch scored an unconverted try from a bout of passing by the' backs, making Wellington's total 11 points. Old Boys did not open their account until shortly after the opening of the second spell, ■when Baldwin kicked an easy penalty goal. From a few yards inside half-way Taylor added another penalty goal for Wellington, and later Baldwin kicked a penalty goal for Old Boys. The second spell produced little entertaining football. Wellington 14, Old Boys 6. The referee was Mr. J. Wilson. .
