OBITUARY

MR. PETER ROBERTSON

MAYOR OF UPPER HUTT

Mr. Peter Robertson, Mayas: of Upper Hutt. died in the Wellington Hospital yesterday morning, aged 59. Yesterday was Mr. Robertson's birthday, he having been born on May 14, 1880.

Born at Eaglebank, Bendigo, Australia, Mr. Robertson arrived in the Dominion in 1900, taking up his residence at Lower Hutt. In 1911 he commenced business at Upper Hutt as a coachbuilder and undertaker. From then on he took an active interest in local body affairs.

His public life was a very full one. From 1914 to 1918 he was chairman of the old Town Board at Upper Hutt. For thirteen years he was a member of the Wellington Education Board. Since its inception he had been presi-

dent of the Upper Hutt branch of the New Zealand Labour Party. At one time he was the district's representative on the City and Suburban Highways Board.

This was his third term as Mayor of the borough, he having previously held the position from 1927 to 1931. At the time of his death he was also the borough's representative on the Hutt Valley Power Board, a member of the Wellington Water Board, the district's representative on the Wellington Education Board, and a member of the Board of Governors of the Hutt Valley High School.

Mr. Robertson leaves a widow and two children of his second marriage, and three sons and two daughters of his first marriage.

He is to receive the honour of a civic funeral, which will take place tomorrow afternoon. The procession is to assemble in Rosenberg Street at 2 p.m., and will proceed to St. John's Church, Main Road, Trentham. It will be headed by the Upper Hutt Municipal Band, followed by the fire brigades. The hearse will be attended by representatives of the Labour Party. Following will be the relatives, Government representatives, representatives of Government Departments, councillors and ex-councillors, members of local bodies, members of the Labour Party, the council staff, business people, the Returned Soldiers' Association, the Physical Welfare Committee, the Ratepayers' and Citizens' Association, the combined sports bodies, the women's organisations," and the general public. The service will be conducted by the Rev. N. E. Winhall.
