DOCTORS' CONTRACTS
The list published today reveals that only 22 doctors have entered into contracts to provide services arising out of the maternity benefits.
The New Zealand branch of the British Medical Association has a membership of approximately 970. The percentage of doctors on the medical register and practising in New Zealand who are not members of the association is very' syiall. It is estimated that about 750 association members are engaged in private practice and are available to do maternity work to some extent or other.
Of the 22 doctors, 14 are in the North Island and eight' in the South Island. Only one Wellington doctor has signed a contract. Two Palmerston North doctors and one New Plymouth doctor have entered into contracts.
Sixty-three obstetrical nurses have signed contracts agreeing to provide services. Of this number 47 are in the North Island and the remainder in the South. Three Wellington and two Lower Hutt nurses are included.
Contracts have been signed by 87 private maternity hospitals, and of this number 70 are in the North Island. Wellington has five private hospitals which have entered into contracts, Lower Hutt three, and Petone, Upper Hutt, and Johnsonville one each.
