LAWN TENNIS

EASTER TOURNEY

SATURDAY'S RESULTS

The Easter championship and handicap tournament of the Wellington Lawn Tennis Association was continued at Miramar on Saturday. The weather was good, although a light southerly wind came up in the afternoon. Good progress was made, 87 matches being played. Considering the other attractions at this time of the year, there was a fair gallery for the second day of the tournament. As most of the A grade events are nearing the semi-final stages, only a few were played in the afternoon. Apart from the defeat of R. McL. Ferkins by J. Hamilton, there were no major surprises. A number of the games developed into very keen tussles and there were one or two long contests. An interesting match was a B grade women's doubles in which Miss Longton and Mrs. Stratmore were leading Misses Murphy and Penburthy 5 to 1 in the third set, with three match points in the seventh game, which they lost after six deuces. They won the set, however, by 8 to 6.

In the semi-finals of the A grade women's singles Mrs. Adams beat Miss J. Burns, and Miss I. Small beat Miss J. Beban. Miss Beban was not -easily defeated, and her "cutting" of the-ball and her quick returns kept Miss Small busy. For a while it looked as though the match would run to three sets, but Miss Small played well and her superior courtcraft won her the match. The tournament was continued today and will conclude tomorrow. Saturday's results, other than those already published, are as follows:— CHAMPIONSHIP EVENTS. A GRADE. Men's Singles.
