GAMING CHARGES

Raids on premises allegedly used for gaming purposes were conducted by the police on Saturday at Petone, Lower Hutt, and Upper Hutt.

At Petone Archibald More Merrilees, a tobacconist, and Fredrick Lawrence Rodewald, were arrested. Merrilees was charged with keeping a common gaming house, and Rodewald with carrying on the business of a bookmaker. A remand on bail in each case was granted. The raid was conducted by Detective-Sergeant Robinson and Constable R. A. Morris.

At Lower Hutt, George Phillips, tobacconist, and his son, Nelson Victor Phillips, also Horace Kenneth Skilton and William Green, were arrested. G. P. Phillips and Skilton were charged with the keeping of common gaming houses and M. V. Phillips and Green with assisting. Each was remanded on bail. The raid was conducted by Detective-Sergeant H. C. Murch and Constables C. E. Tanner, E. J. Brownie, and W. H. Smith.

At Upper Hutt, Ernest Armstrong Plummer, a billard saloon keeper, was charged with carrying on the business of a bookmaker, and was also remanded on bail. He was arrested by Detective-Sergeant Murch and Constable C. E. Stewart.
